Chapter 1

At the start of the book Beatrice and her mother (Natalie) are introduced.  Natalie is cutting Beatrice's hair, a ritual that is performed every three months.  They live in the faction Abnegation, who value selflessness above all else.  They discuss the aptitude test that is coming up and if Beatrice is nervous or not.  SHE IS!  The test will determine which faction she is most suited for, and Beatrice will decide if she leaves her family to pursue a new life or stay in Abnegation.

"The test doesn't have to change our choice."

It's clear from the first few pages that Beatrice tries hard to be selfless and make her family happy, but it doesn't come naturally to her like it does to her brother, Caleb.  At school she says one of her bad habits is watching the Dauntless arrive every morning.  Dauntless is the closest you can come to being free.  They do what they want and prove their bravery by jumping out of a moving train every morning. Obviously, something inside her longs to be Dauntless.

I wouldn't blame Beatrice if she wanted to leave Abnegation.  It seems SOOOO boring!  Not being able to do what you want, when you want to do it.   I understand that helping people is an awesome thing but I would not be able to do it 24/7.
